Musical America names Gabriela Lena Frank Composer of the Year
GLFCAM is excited to share the news: Musical America Worldwide has named GLFCAM director Gabriela Lena Frank composer of the year for 2026! The organization writes the following about her work, her concern for the environment, as well as the GLFCAM organization:
Gabriela Lena Frank’s compositions draw on her life experience, reflecting both her Latin-American background and her passionate commitment to the environment. This season she will achieve a new level of recognition as her opera El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego reaches the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House.
Gabriela Lena Frank sees herself as a storyteller. She started young: as children in Berkley, CA, she and her brother wrote stories for their father, a Mark Twain scholar, to critique. Her polyglot ancestry is a tale in itself—her Lithuanian Jewish father met her Peruvian Indigenous/Chinese mother when he was a Peace Corps volunteer—and mother/daughter journeys to Peru incubated musical narratives...
