Arts Citizenship

"Musicians are naturals for embodying citizenship, but sometimes, truthfully, we need to be reminded. After all, orchestra auditions and competitions transfix us while reviews send our spirits soaring or plummeting. Who has time to worry about citizenship when the industry is so jealous of every hour of our practice time and every ray of our bandwidth?

I also well remember how I kept my volunteer work in a men’s prison outside of Detroit hush hush as a student, concerned that I would not be deemed a “serious” musician. When I did tell colleagues about meeting with inmates to talk about my favorite composers, past and present, and their urgency to create music, instead of being ridiculed, I found kindred spirits who lustily cheered... What an amazing moment of realization that was! I newly learned that there is a hunger among musicians for relevance beyond the concert hall. Really, who better than artists to address that awful sort of benign neglect, that insidious censorship of voices, that happens in communities with limited access to creativity and self-expression?"

At the Academy, we believe the twenty-first century musician ideally values citizenship, creativity, and artistic excellence equally. Consequently, for our emerging artists, we offer numerous opportunities to develop their artistic talents not only for the professional arenas but also for the good of communities and causes not natively attended to by the music industry. In addition to our commitment to eco-citizenship and concert fundraisers for the Anderson Valley Fire Department and victims of fire disaster, the Academy offers programs in the following areas:

Boonville Youth Music Program

Each year, two artists are funded to live in Boonville for up to nine months to provide a variety of civic services including teaching music according to their area of expertise and mutual area of need within the school district. This is supplemented by regular multi-day visits from performers based in the San Francisco Bay Area (from a broad range of demographic and aesthetic backgrounds) who are on hand to coach, mentor, play with, and play new works composed by the students.

Artist-Citizens-in-Residence

Each year, up to two composers are provided a fully funded artist retreat in Boonville, CA of approximately nine months. Alumni contribute between ten to twenty hours of community service to work with young local music students and different community groups. Congratulations to Dustin Carlson (Cycle 10) and Shane Cook (Cycle 12) for serving as the Artists-in-Residence for the 2023-2024 school year!

Composing for Young Musicians

The Academy is pleased to embark on a longterm commissioning program utilizing the talents of a diverse range of Academy Alums to create high quality contemporary music for young pre-college musicians, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We were excited to launched this program with a collaboration with Play on Philly on The Composing For Young Orchestras Project in 2022-2023.

Artistic Wellness

The Academy’s pilot wellness program, under the guidance of Academy Alum Danny Gouker (Cycles 6 and 8, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, MM, LMSW), is designed especially for creatives on a range of issues for themselves, their students, and for community members they interact with in outreach programs.
